Economic research examines the backdrop every client decision is taken against, from the path of growth and inflation to the stance of policy and the availability of credit.
No client controls the economic environment, and no financing or investment decision is immune to it. This work looks at that environment directly: the path of output and inflation, the posture of monetary and fiscal policy, how long a change in policy rates takes to reach borrowers and the labour market, and whether an inflation episode is proving persistent or fading with the shock that caused it.
The method is unglamorous. Payroll and wage series, survey indicators, credit aggregates, and the minutes and speeches that signal where a central bank is leaning, read alongside historical episodes that rhyme with the present one. We also track the slower-moving trends that outlast a cycle, including demographics, trade patterns, and shifts in how goods and services are produced.
The work is kept deliberately separate from investment recommendations. Its job is to describe the conditions a decision is being made within. What a client then does inside those conditions is a different conversation. Views are revised when the data warrants it, and we try to be explicit in advance about what would change our mind.
Activity and price data read alongside the monetary and fiscal response to it.
How long a change in rates takes to reach borrowing costs, hiring decisions, and prices.
Demographics, trade patterns, and production shifts that run longer than any single cycle.
